The 13th California Indian Storytelling Festival to be held at the state-of-the-art San Leandro Public Library Theater Center in San Leandro, California.
This year's festival Broad Horizons: Following Ancient Trade Routes is a two-day gathering Indigenous Storytellers from California, Oregon, Hawaii, and New Zealand.
The cultural exchange between Indigenous peoples from California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii has grown to include the Maori people of New Zealand. CISA events greatly contribute to the retention and revitalization of Indigenous communities and their oral traditions by providing forums for these under-served communities.
The forums in this project will provide a time for Storytellers to share their stories so they may learn from each other, discuss issues -- such as the revitalization of their canoe cultures -- and pass on stories to new generations as they educate the public.
The cultural exchange between California Natives and Hawaiians has taken place at CISA events since 2003, and the ancient connections between these peoples has opened new areas of dialogue and exploration, particularly in regard to the stories of ancient trade routes, by sea, river and land. The stories have grown to include the Maori People of New Zealand.
